LAN Colombia Neutralize emisions of ground operation and transfers

LAN Colombia, looking to be a more sustainable company, keeps making efforts to contribute and mitigate their impacts in climate change. In this topic, this company has measured the carbon footprint associated to direct and indirect ground operations and transfers, to offset these emissions from this activities.

The measurement range of the company in Colombia, considered all activities that generate emissions of Greenhouse Gases (GHG) such as emissions from air operations, ground equipment (fuel consumption and diesel), air conditioning units, consumption electricity sales offices and administration, derived from transport of employees and business air travel emissions.

The Spanish Association for Standardization and Certification (AENOR), world leader in certification of management systems, products and services was in charge of verification of emissions produced by LAN Colombia.

This neutralization of carbon emissions were equivalent to 1.017 tons of CO2, which was finalized by purchasing carbon credits reductions certified under VCS | Verified Carbon Standard of The Chocó-Darién Conservation corridor REDD+ Project.

 

The Chocó-Darién Conservation corridor REDD+ Project
This project will prevent the emission of 2.5 million tons of CO2 during the 30 years that will last the initiative , emissions that would have resulted from deforestation of approximately 50% of the protected area.  From a social point of view, Anthrotect S.A. that is the organization responsible for carrying out the project, works with landowners communities, which are trained to strengthen their governance and capacity to measure, monitor and improve their forested land. From the economic point of view, with the funds collected from the sale of carbon credits, the project invests in the development of alternative livelihood activities, such as cocoa and aromatic plants. In addition, 50% of the funds rests with the community.
