Colbún offset their CO2emissions

Colbun is a chilean company that seeks to generate electricity, balancing security and competitivity aspects with sustainability, minimizing its environmental impact, protecting natural resources and using them in an efficient way.

Aware of climate change and concerned about biodiversity and habitat’s protection, Colbun carries out its environmental management looking for the environmental viability of their projects and operations. With more than 10 years of compromise with climate change mitigation, Colbun has not just developed carbon reduction projects and assessed its carbon footprint; it has also offset part of it, as part of its sustainable strategy. Along with these measures, the company has reported this assessment to the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), and has made its Sustainability Report under the Global Reporting Initiative methodology (GRI), in order to measure its environmental performance.

All these practices  show Colbun´s commitment to Climate Change mitigationand its prupose to act in responsible and transparentl way.

For second consecutive year, Colbún has offset their carbon emissions generated by its corporate offices. For this, he measured his carbon footprint under internationally recognized methodology – GHG Protocol -; This was verified by an independent third party, and has compensated by carbon credits, which have certified their reductions under the VCS standard | Verified Carbon Standard; In order to obtain the certification of SCX, for the carbon neutrality attribute of its corporate offices.

Finally, the carbon emissions of colbún office during the 2012 reached a total of 2661 tons of CO22e coming mainly from the consumption of electric power and fuel, personnel transfers, business trips and disposal of waste, among others. The carbon credits came from a renewable energy project developed by the same company, Hydroelectric Power Plant of Quilleco Pass, located in the Biobío Region, which is certified by the Clean Development Mechanism  and Verified Carbon Standard (VCS).
