FESTIVAL DESPIERTA! 2012, an CO2 neutral event

The main environmental impacts identified in Despierta! 2012 were:

* Emissions of Greenhouse Gases (GHG) emissions: air travel of artists, collaborators and cargo transport, the energy consumption to supply lighting and sound show and transportation of the audience attending the Festival from their homes to the site where it grows.

* The waste generated at the show.

* Water use and treatment, which are partially water footprint of the festival. We have a commitment to offset our carbon footprint, and we will do it by investing in a project in Chile, located in the VII region, contributing to the development of renewable energy in Chile by reducing CO2 emissions certified.

Initiative details

  • SCX Code: 014-CL1804522
  • Initiative of: Productoras La Clave Producciones and La Oreja
  • Neutralization object: Event
  • Number of tons CO2: 74
  • Vigency date: 09-08-2012
  • Carbon footprint Mesurer: Conservación & Desarrollo Consultores
  • Foorprint Verificator: Deloitte
  • Reduction project: Lircay Run-of-river Project
  • Registry: Markit

For this, we have made a first estimate of the carbon footprint, which will then be verified by Deloitte (independent third party). The estimated carbon footprint for the event is approximately 100 tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (tCO2e 100).

As we can see, the impact of the festival are moderate and correspond to an average of 7.5 kg CO2e per viewer.

The organization will neutralize the total emissions accounted for by the purchase of carbon credits from Santiago Climate Exchange (SCX) and also is designing a plan to reduce emissions for the following versions of the festival.

The entertainment industry and the show has an important role in generating commitment from mass audiences and artists.

Festival Despierta! has taken the first step to find and neutralize their impact, and thus contribute to the objective of the entertainment industry to raise its environmental standards and minimized negative impacts.
