Carbon Zero Program – Plaza de la Constitución

The Minister (s) of Foreign Affairs Fernando Schmidt, announced in 2012 the Foreign Ministry’s plan to reduce pollution and neutralize their carbon footprint.

At that time, to create awareness among the people about the importance of such initiatives, the Ministry of Foreing Affairs. installed at the Plaza of the Constitution a green balloon 10 feet in diameter, representing a ton of carbon dioxide (CO2), equivalent to only a quarter of the carbon that produces a person in Chile per year.

The balloon was also in front of the building of the United Nations (UN) in New York, in January of that year, when the Chancery internationally launched its program of neutralizing carbon footprint.

This plan has been implemented not only in our headquarters, but also in Embassies, Consulates and Missions abroad, becoming the first Chancellor of the world to develop such a broad program of this type and also one of the pioneers in the public sector in Chile, and we are the second Ministry in this measurement.
