The Latin America and Caribbean Climate Week 2022 (LACCW) was held last July 18-22 in Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic, and is part of the instances recognized by the Glasgow Climate Pact agreed at COP26, as a platform for governments and stakeholders to strengthen a credible and lasting response to climate change.

Through a partnership between the National Council for Climate Change of the Dominican Republic, ADOCEM and FICEM, the Inter-American Cement Federation, during the week of July 18-22, Santo Domingo will be transformed into a laboratory open to the world illustrating what it is like to live in a carbon neutral world. Through a special program, the carbon footprint of LAC Climate Week was neutralized, but the ambition is much greater, and aims to generate verified and accredited GHG reductions that would offset an average day of emissions from the city of Santo Domingo.

Thus, the cement industry highlights practices such as the use of alternative fuels for the operation of kilns; or the co-processing of materials that in the region usually end up in illegal landfills such as tires, generating not only visual impacts but also subsequent methanization of waste; changes in electricity supply from renewable sources -which not only clean up electricity consumption, but also enable the hydrogen economy to take off, to free our industry and transportation sector from emissions-; CO2 retention in concrete works; or, the conservation of our natural forests as net carbon sinks, allowing the deployment of Nature-Based Solutions in the region that is an icon for them.
