Climate Change Adaptation System Design

On October 5th, the consultation workshop for the first version of the protocol of the project “Design of the Climate Change Adaptation Attributes Certification System for Chilean Forest Ecosystems” (SCACC) was held at the Isla Teja Campus of the Universidad Austral de Chile, in Valdivia. In this meeting, a dialogue and feedback protocol was developed, regarding the focus of the contents, the dimensions considered, as well as the criteria, indicators and verifiers.

Within the framework of the National Strategy for Climate Change and Vegetation Resources (ENCCRV), led by Conaf, several initiatives have been developed that consider Adaptation as one of their central axes, with the focus on maximizing the environmental services provided by forest ecosystems. One of these initiatives linked to Adaptation is being developed by the consortium composed of SCX | Santiago Climate Exchange, the Fundación Centro de los bosques Nativos | FORECOS team, GAIn specialists, Winrock International and CQuest Capital. This tool seeks to support the development of CONAF’s future forestry policy, based on a system of payments for environmental services, which in this case would correspond to a payment for activities that reduce the social and environmental vulnerability to climate change of basins or sub-basins of the national territory.

This consultation workshop brought together various public-private stakeholders to present the results of the development of a first draft of the Climate Adaptation Protocol and where attendees, through a structured participatory methodology, were able to make suggestions, comments and counter-proposals. The results of this workshop are in the process of being elaborated.
