The Universidad Tecnológica Metropolitana (UTEM) has decided to neutralize the carbon emissions associated with its direct emissions in 2018 and those generated in the future. Through its Sustainability Program, created in 2010, it carries out a series of initiatives that seek to express the institutional commitment and reflect in its work the training of professionals committed to sustainability, being this carbon neutrality a very important step.

Summary of the initiative
  • SCX Code: 0094-E6364A77
  • Initiative of: Metropolitan Technological University
  • Neutralization object: Direct Emissions 2018
  • Volume tonCO2: 984 tCO2
  • Effective date: 31-12-2019
  • Footprint meter: Huella Chile Program
  • Footprint Verifier: CYCLO
  • Abatement Project: Santa Marta Project
  • Registration: GS

The quantification of GHG emissions was carried out by the UTEM Sustainability Program through the HuellaChile Carbon Management Program of the Ministry of Environment (MMA), and has been developed in accordance with Chilean standards NCh-ISO 14064:2013 (parts 1, 2 and 3), NCh-ISO 14065:2014; NCh-ISO 14066:2012; NCh-ISO 14069:2014 and NCh 3300:2014.

In turn, the quantification and reduction of emissions has been verified by an independent third party, CYCLO. The carbon credits used correspond to the Santa Marta project, located in the Metropolitan Region, which will be removed from the International Registry to ensure the traceability and transparency of the process, thus concluding the CO2 Neutral Certification of SCX, for the Direct Emissions (in scopes 1 and 2) of its operations for the period 2018.

During 2018, the Program also carried out other activities, including: the first Ibero-American Congress on Education for Sustainability, an internal teacher training course on sustainability, various awareness campaigns based on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for the UTEM community, the second version of the Sustenta UTEM award and the first Institutional Sustainability Report. As of 2019, highlights include the certification of the Energy Management System based on the ISO 50,001 standard, the implementation of the UTEM Sustainable Offices Program, the third version of the Sustenta UTEM award and a training program for students and staff, among others.
