The last CLUB VERDE Special Sale, between September 6 and 9, 2012, neutralized the carbon emissions associated with the execution of this activity. This was the first time that El Mercurio’s Readers’ Club has carried out this type of initiative, which allowed it to learn where and how carbon emissions are generated when an event is held.

Summary of the initiative
  • SCX Code: 013-CL1604522
  • Initiative of: Green Club of El Mercurio
  • Neutralization object: Event
  • Volume tonCO2: 13 tCO2
  • Effective Date: 09-09-2012
  • Footprint meter: Poch Ambiental
  • Footprint verifier: Deloitte
  • Abatement Project: Lircay Pass-Through Plant
  • Registration: Markit

This was a collaborative process that contributed to a greater awareness of what actions allow them to decrease their carbon footprint, and how they can also decide which actions contribute positively to the environment.

SCX is the licensor for the use of the SCX CO2 Neutral, which guarantees the traceability of the process, and supported the selection of the mitigation project, of Chilean origin, in which the company invested for the neutralization of the event. The team was advised by Poch Ambiental, experts in carbon footprint measurement, and the SCX certification process was verified by Deloitte, as an independent third party.

The measurement of the event’s carbon footprint included aspects such as: fuel consumption in facilities; electricity consumption; transportation of attendees to the event site, including airplane and bus trips to transport attendees; waste transportation and paper consumption.

The neutralization was achieved by investing in the verified emission reduction certificates of the Lircay project, which is a run-of-river hydroelectric power plant located in the commune of San Clemente, province of Talca, Maule Region, Chile.
