Festival DESPIERTA! has taken the first step to understand and neutralize its impact, thus contributing to the entertainment industry’s goal of raising its environmental standards and minimizing its negative impacts.

The main environmental impacts identified in Despierta! 2012 were:

– Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions produced by: air travel by artists, their collaborators and cargo to be transported; energy consumption to supply the lighting and sound of the show; and transportation to and from the Festival for the public attending the Festival from their homes to the venue where it was held.

– Waste generated during the show.

– Water consumption and treatment, which partially constitute the water footprint of the festival. We had a commitment to neutralize our carbon footprint, and we did so by investing in a Chilean project, located in the VII region, which contributes to the development of renewable energies in Chile by reducing certified CO2 emissions.

For this purpose, an initial estimate of the carbon footprint was made, which was subsequently verified by Deloitte (independent third party). The estimated Carbon Footprint for the event is approximately 100 tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (100 tCO2e).

As can be seen, the impacts of the festival are moderate and correspond to an average of 7.5 kgCO2e per spectator.

The organization neutralized the total emissions recorded by purchasing carbon credits from the Santiago Climate Exchange (SCX) and is also designing an emissions reduction plan for the following versions of the festival.

The entertainment industry plays an important role in generating engagement from mass audiences and artists.
