In an effort to become a more sustainable company and contribute to mitigating the impacts of climate change, LAN Peru measured its carbon footprint for the second year, associated with direct and indirect activities related to its ground operations and transportation, in order to neutralize these emissions.

Summary of the initiative
  • SCX Code: 0043-E2227A27
  • Initiative of: LAN Peru
  • Neutralization object: Ground Operations and Transfers
  • Volume tonCO2: 5,303 tCO2
  • Effective date: 31-12-2015
  • Footprint meter: LAN Peru
  • Footprint verifier: AENOR
  • Reduction Project: REDD+ Castaña and Madre de Dios Concessions
  • Registration: APX

The scope of the company’s measurement in Peru considered all activities that generate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, such as emissions from air operations, ground equipment (gasoline and diesel consumption), air conditioning equipment, electricity consumption in sales and administration offices, emissions from employee transportation and business air travel.

The verification of LAN Peru’s emissions was carried out by the Spanish Association for Standardization and Certification (AENOR), a world leader in the certification of management systems, products and services.

Neutralization of carbon emissions was equivalent to 5,303 tons CO2emissions, which was achieved through the purchase of carbon credits, reductions certified under the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) of the REDD+ project in Concesiones de Castañas and Madre de Dios.

This project seeks to put an end to the continuous deforestation that is occurring in the concessions due to the construction of the interoceanic highway, which is attracting significant migration from the southern Andes. New migrants often occupy the land of concessionaires (who are the most unprotected) to live on or establish agricultural areas, which contributes to social tensions. It should be noted that this project protects an area considered to be
hotspots
biodiversity hotspots, providing habitat for endangered species.

Boques Amazónicos -BAM- has partnered with the Federación de Castañeros de Madre de Dios to carry out efforts to prevent deforestation in Brazil nut concessions. The objective of the REDD project is to protect 500,000 hectares of concessions.
