The MSA-1 hydroelectric project consists of two run-of-river hydroelectric power plants developed by Araucanía Power S.A. The project is located on the Pedregoso and Pichipedregoso rivers, near Villarrica, Cautín province, Araucanía region.

Project details
  • Location: Villarica, Chile
  • Category: Hydroelectric Power
  • Standard: Verified Carbon Standard

This project, with a total installed capacity of 3.00 MW, uses technologies of proven efficiency and reliability in the run-of-river power plant market. The project design consists of two intakes, two pressure pipelines of approximately 3 km each, 2 powerhouses, 2 Francis turbines plus 1 Pelton turbine and transmission line to the grid connection point, among other things.

The project has been operational since September 2018 and is registered under the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS). The implementation of this hydroelectric project displaces the electricity production of thermoelectric power plants currently operating in the system and contributes to the reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The average annual emissions reduction expected from the project activity is 10,110 tCO2.
